How to Update NPI Information for Health Providers

What is an NPI number?

A National Provider Identifier (NPI) number is a code assigned by Medicare and Medicaid to all medical providers. The code consists of ten digits and is unique to each entity, whether it is a person or an organization. Anyone who practices medicine is assigned a number, and their information is stored in an NPI registry for easy access. Their number does not change whether they move or change jobs.

All health care providers who are HIPAA-covered entities, as well as those who file claims electronically or use a clearinghouse to bill insurance, must apply for an NPI.

How does the NPI registry work?

You can use the NPI registry as a tool for NPI lookup of any doctor, physician, or healthcare provider. The list includes:-

  • Family medicine practitioners
  • Physician’s assistants
  • Internal medicine
  • Nurse practitioners
  • And more

You can enter any of the following information to obtain the necessary information for completing claims forms, or to simply search for or confirm a practitioner’s registration:

Name (For individuals).

Organization name (For group practitioners).

NPI number (search will return the record for that exact number).

How to update NPI information for health providers?

Most people don’t realize how simple the process is. Simply go to https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/ and create or login into your NPPES account. You can request an address change through your account. We recommend this method because it is the most convenient way to make changes.

You can also use the official CMS.gov form to make these changes. This form can be found at https://www.cms.gov/Medicare/CMS-Forms/CMS-Forms/downloads/cms10114.pdf. Once you fill the form, please send it to the address stated below:-

P.O. Box 6059,

Fargo,

Can I change my NPI number?

No, it cannot be changed in most cases. It remains the same throughout your practice time even if you change your practice location.
