What Exactly Is A Taxonomy Code?
Health Care Provider Taxonomy code is a unique alphanumeric code of ten characters that are used to identify the type, classification, and area of specialization of the health care provider. The code is intended for use in an electronic domain, specifically in ASC X12N Health Care transactions.
This includes transactions governed by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. Taxonomy codes for various health care experts also allow providers to specify their specialty when filing claims. They are also required when requesting an NPI number.
These codes are assigned to both individuals and organizations in the health care field. The National Uniform Claim Committee is in charge of maintaining the materials that contain these codes, which are produced by the Washington Publishing Company (NUCC). The Taxonomy codes are classified into three levels based on the services provided by health care providers. The levels are as follow:-
Level 1: Provider Type
This is the broadest of the three levels. It lumps all healthcare providers into a single occupational category, with no classification or specification—for example, Dental Providers, General Physicians, Surgeons, Hospitals, and so on.
Level 2: Classification
This level categorizes the Level 1 Provider Type more distinctly. At this level, the health care provider’s service is described in much greater detail. For example, at this level, the Taxonomy code for occupational therapy will be different from the Taxonomy code for speech therapy.
Level 3: Area of Specialization
As the name implies, this is the level of specialization, as it provides specific Taxonomy code categories.

The easy taxonomy code lookup is to use National Uniform Claim Committee (NUCC) code setlist. It will help you find the taxonomy code that best describes your provider type, classification, or specialization. The other way to find it is by visiting the website npiregistry.cms.hhs.gov/ and then you have to enter your NPI Number into the field, and click Search.
